Academic Success

Updated: Aug 11, 2022

How can you find something if you don't even know what you are looking for? That is the purpose of this section; a blueprint academic success.

What Defines Success?

Success is not a one size fits all. With that being said, what do you think defines success? Ultimately the answer to that question is the question itself. The borders you create on success are the parameters in which success is defined. You must envision what success looks like to you, and then you may begin to chase it. In terms of academic success this might look like becoming more studious, learning a new skill, or more commonly achieving a degree.

How to start

First, grab a pen. Then, write your goals down on a sheet of paper. Is it that easy? Not entirely, but is shown to improve your odds of achieving you goals by 42% according to a research conducted by psychology Dr. Gail Mathews at the Dominican University of California (Economy, 2018).

There are two reasons why writing down you goals can help you achieve them. The first is related to what we discussed above in regards to determining what success looks like specifically to you. Writing down your version of success constrains you into actually taking the time to think about what the parameters in which you would consider success to look like. The other reason why jotting down your goals improves your odds of obtaining them is because it acts as motivation. When you write you goals on paper it will enlist you to brainstorm how to achieve them. You can gain momentum from your motivation to make your next step towards attaining success.

As a student, stress can take a toll and hinder your ability to stay focused on your goals. Some universities may have a department devoted to helping you stay on top of goals so they don't become future regrets. UNLV is one of these University's. Luckily, as a student at UNLV you have access to their Academic Student Center (ASC). The ASC has a physical location on campus or you can find support via their website (https://www.unlv.edu/asc). You may find support in the form of:

  • Advising

  • Coaching

  • Tutoring

  • Supplemental Instruction

  • Bridge Program

  • Dual Enrollment

  • Peer Mentoring

  • First-Year Seminars

  • & Student Athletes
